WHAT'S INCLUDED: SHOTGUN

We took a 1969 Belgian Browning Auto-5 Magnum Twelve, one of John Browning’s most recognizable sporting shotguns, and decided it needed a little more menace in its bloodstream. This one already started life as the meaner, harder-hitting 3.00" Magnum version, so once you give it the Whippet treatment, the whole thing takes on a different kind of attitude. Belgian steel, FN engraving, Magnum receiver, short-barreled swagger, and enough badass old-school presence to make a standard field gun look like it showed up wearing Sunday clothes to a knife fight.

The Magnum Auto-5 has always had more weight, more authority, and more muscle than the lighter field guns, and you can feel that in the way this thing carries itself. That humpback receiver sits there like an old heavyweight with cauliflower ears, and the long-recoil action has that big mechanical shove that made these guns famous. Nothing dainty about it. This is the Auto-5 with its shoulders squared up, built around 3.00" shells and made for the kind of shooter who likes his Browning with a little more thunder in the chest.

And then there’s the bottle opener in the stock, because apparently this shotgun wasn’t already mean enough. We inset a bottle opener right into the buttstock, and somehow it looks like it belonged there all along. It is ridiculous, unnecessary, completely over the top, and absolutely perfect. A Belgian Magnum Whippet with its own bottle opener has the kind of personality that turns a gun-room table into a crowd. Everybody sees the humpback first, then the Magnum marking, then they spot that opener in the stock and start grinning like somebody just told a dirty joke at deer camp.

Under all that attitude is still the real-deal Belgian Magnum platform: 12 gauge, 3.00" chamber, long-recoil operation, and the heavier-duty configuration that made the Magnum Twelve the hard-use member of the Auto-5 family. This was Browning’s serious-business waterfowl medicine, meant to digest the heavier shells that ordinary field guns weren’t built around. In plain counter-talk, this is not the polite little bird gun in the corner. This is the mean one. The one with more shove, more bark, and enough old-school Belgian machinery moving around inside to remind you every time it cycles that John Browning did not design timid shotguns.

For the collector who likes history with some bite to it, this thing is damn near impossible to ignore. Belgian FN manufacture, classic Auto-5 humpback lines, Magnum hardware, old-world engraving, vintage walnut, Whippet attitude, and a bottle opener planted in the stock like the punchline to the whole build. There are prettier Brownings, rarer Brownings, and more proper Brownings, but there are not many this badass. If your rack already has enough gentlemanly field guns behaving themselves, this is the one you buy to make the rest of them nervous.
