This 1942 Savage-Stevens Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I* is a wartime American-built .303 British service rifle from one of the most important Allied small-arms production programs of World War II. Savage manufacture gave Britain and the Commonwealth another industrial pipeline for the rugged No. 4 rifle, and the Mk I* became the signature North American variation with its simplified bolt-head release system. Serial number 16C1816 fits the Savage “C” serial format associated with Chicopee Falls production, giving this rifle exactly the transatlantic wartime character that makes Savage Enfields such a compelling part of WWII collecting.

The Lee-Enfield action is one of the great military bolt-action systems ever fielded. Its rear-locking, cock-on-closing design was built for speed, smooth cycling, and sustained infantry fire, while the 10-round detachable box magazine offered double the onboard capacity of many contemporary service rifles. The approximately 25.18" barrel, full-length military furniture, protected front sight, and substantial No. 4 receiver give the rifle its unmistakable balance of British service-rifle tradition and wartime production efficiency.
The centerpiece of this example is its telescopic sight assembly. Mounted along the left side of the receiver is a No. 32-pattern scope with prominent external adjustment turrets, a heavy mounting bracket, and a leather lens cover that completes the classic British sniper-rifle silhouette. The No. 32 family of telescopes is inseparably linked with the famed No. 4(T) sniper system, where the optic, bracket, receiver pads, and rifle were treated as a carefully fitted precision package. Here, the scope configuration dominates the rifle visually and gives it the unmistakable long-range character collectors associate with wartime scoped Lee-Enfields.

Collector interest also lives in the smaller details. The rifle shows the North American Mk I* receiver configuration, multiple military-style inspection and component marks, an “ENGLAND” export marking, and a separately numbered magazine. The wood carries the scratches, compression marks, finish variation, and handling wear expected from a military rifle that has lived a long life rather than sitting untouched in storage. The scope, bracket, and rifle should be appreciated as the configuration presently assembled, giving this Savage No. 4 Mk I* the unmistakable profile and visual presence of a classic wartime British sniper rifle. The No. 32-pattern optic and substantial side-mount assembly become the centerpiece of the rifle, transforming an already desirable WWII service arm into a striking, precision-oriented collector piece.

As a package, this Savage No. 4 Mk I* has presence. The long walnut furniture, deep military metal finish, 10-round magazine, exposed boltwork, and towering scope assembly create the unmistakable silhouette of a WWII-era precision Lee-Enfield. Savage-built No. 4 rifles already occupy a special place where American manufacturing muscle met British battlefield requirements; add the dramatic No. 32-pattern optic setup and this one becomes the kind of rifle that commands attention from across the room. It has the history, the architecture, and the sniper-rifle attitude that make a military collection feel complete.
